A long time ago, in Romanesca, on the great Roman road linking Lugdunum (Lyon, then capital of Gaul) to the North Sea, vines were planted around Gallo-Roman villas. Over the centuries, vine cultivation continued in Romanèche-Thorins, in the heart of the Beaujolais region. Having taken up the Roman torch on this exceptional terroir, Guy and Ferréole Chastel chose this name for their estate.
Today, 40 years later, Antoine and Olivier Chastel have taken over the 7 hectares of the finest vineyards in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, handed down by their parents. In addition to Moulin-à-Vent, the twin brothers have expanded the range of Beaujolais wines with Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, and white and rosé Beaujolais Villages.
Their philosophy is to work at the plot level to bring out the characteristics specific to each climate with vines, some of which are 50 years old. They work with high-density goblet-trained vines with strong competition between the vines, resulting in low yields but better grape quality. They also promote single-vineyard cuvées aged in barrels to produce excellent wines for aging.
The estate obtained its Organic Farming certification in 2022.
