John Kautz’s grandparents emigrated from Germany and settled in the Lodi area to farm. In 1948, John Kautz founded John Kautz Farm. Since 1968, the Kautz family has been growing grapes in Lodi, and practicing sustainable development for over 40 years. The Kautzes own over 2,800 hectares of vineyards and are ranked among the largest wine grape producers in the United States.
They own several brands, including Drifting Wines. Their brands have been carefully selected and come mainly from the Lodi appellation in California, known for its Mediterranean climate. The vineyards are certified by the California Sustainable Wine Growing Alliance. In 1990, Ironstone Vineyard opened its doors and became one of the most awarded brands in the USA
Lodi Wine Country, located between San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountains, is fast emerging as one of California’s most exciting wine destinations. Over the past decade, 4th and 5th generation winemakers have innovated with cutting-edge technologies, propelling Lodi into the spotlight.
In their 60 years together, John Kautz and his wife Gail have built an enviable legacy. For nearly 30 years, their wine brands have seduced critics and delighted countless consumers. They have received numerous awards, including "Producer of the Year" in 2012 from the California Association of Winegrapes Growers.
