Garciarévalo is a family estate founded in 1991 in the town of Matapozuelos, in the heart of the Rueda wine region of Castilla y León. The estate was founded by José Antonio Arévalo and Benicio Garcia, who understood that there was something extraordinary in these centuries-old vineyards of native verdejo, renowned since time immemorial for producing the finest grapes in the Rueda appellation.

The current generation is a young, dynamic team led by Antonio and Manuela Arévalo; Rodrigo Arévalo is responsible for viticulture and vineyard management, and Reyes Martínez Sagarra is the oenologist. Garciarevalo is truly a close-knit family-run winery, producing some of Spain’s most dynamic white wines while providing a boost to the economic life of the small village of a thousand inhabitants.

Antonio Arévalo initially studied economics, his parents having encouraged him to work in something other than rural agriculture. Yet, like his parents, he too felt a deep attachment to his family village and a link to the historic vineyards when he joined the family winery in 1995.

Garciarévalo specializes in old-vine verdejo, and a little Viura. The estate’s vineyards are mainly made up of vines over 100 years old, including a parcel of pre-phylloxera verdejo vines over 130 years old, all planted using the traditional bush vine system.

The soil here is extremely sandy and low in organic matter, allowing for excellent drainage and a greater difference between daytime and nightime temperatures due to the sand’s ability to rapidly release heat at night. These factors enable their wines to be ripe, yet incredibly fresh, with exceptional acidity for the hot Rueda region. Their viticulture has been totally organic since 2020. As one depends on the other, organic farming has enabled them to favour indigenous yeast colonies in the vineyard, to add complexity during fermentation.
