It was in the late 1950s that Roger Picard, then Mayor of Berru, planted his first vines on plots of land that had recently been granted the Champagne appellation. In the early 1960s, Jacques Picard, Roger’s son, joined the estate and produced his first champagnes under his proper name.
Champagne Jacques Picard was born.
Jacques Picard made numerous investments over the years, to ensure the long-term future of the estate and master the quality of its production. The vineyard was developed, the cellars were enlarged underground and the building underwent multiple extensions. The Maison Jacques Picard now carries out all stages of champagne production on the family estate, from planting to marketing.
Sylvie and Corinne, Jacques Picard’s 2 daughters, took over in the 1990s. Together, accompanied by Corinne’s husband José, and Fiona, the 4th generation, they faithfully continue the House’s unique blend of authenticity, modernity and excellence.
The estate is located in Berru on the Montagne de Reims. The vineyards stretch over the slopes of 3 crus around Reims and Epernay: Berru, Montbré and Avenay-Val-d’Or, the latter two classified as premiers crus. The 3 signature grape varieties are grown here: mainly chardonnay, meunier and pinot noir. As an independent winemaker, the champagnes are produced from A to Z on the estate, using grapes grown exclusively on their vines. The estate is currently converting to organic farming.
Independent winegrowers for 4 generations, the family perpetuates its know-how by blending authenticity, modernity and excellence, with respect for the land and the vines. Respect for nature and the enhancement of biodiversity are top priorities. The Picards seek to ensure that their vines flourish and that their grape varieties and terroirs express themselves, while constantly challenging their techniques. They favour vine-growing techniques that are as manual as possible, while respecting the identity of each terroir to promote the expression of their organoleptic characteristics, with each grape variety having its plot of land.
