Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz has been making wine for three generations and is currently run by Hansjörg Rebholz and his wife Birgit Rebholz is best known for its dry style of whites. The vines planted are Riesling and burgundy varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir.

They follow the old tradition of making pure and natural wines. This philosophy of purity is married with a daily quest for the highest possible quality in the wines. Rebholz combines aspects of biodynamic and organic agriculture. The vineyards were certified organic in 2008.

Rebholz wines are about the intensity of flavour stemming from some of the best sites in the Pfalz with soils ranging from red slate, coloured sandstones and white chalky limestone.

One of their famous vineyards is Kastanienbusch or chestnut bush. This Erste Lage vineyard is on one of the steepest and highest slopes in the Pfalz at 300 meters, on red slate soil that is unusual in the region. These iron-rich, well-draining soils produce wines of great concentration. “Ganshorn” Im Sonnenschein is an Erste Lage vineyard which is planted to Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Im Sonnenschein mean “sunshine” and there is something about the combination of sunshine and coloured sandstone and limestone soils that gives the Riesling and Pinot Blanc a hit of kirsch on the nose. Rebholz’ oldest vineyard in Albersweiler was planted to Gewürztraminer in 1947. The vines are trellised on pergolas because, at the time, Hansjörg’s grandfather believed the region had a similar climate to Tuscany. Blessed with these soils and low yields, Rebholz captures the clarity of fruit with skin contact after crushing, ferments at cool temperatures in stainless steel and ages on the lees until close to bottling in April.

The key idea is the production of “Nature Wines”. This idea originates from the 40s when Ökonomierat Eduard Rebholz decided to produce unique and independent wines beyond the mainstream. A philosophy which is still practised today: The wines are biodynamically produced, never deacidified or chaptalized. The wines reflect the vintage and the soil. They are “Typical Rebholz”
